The Route

The Story

In 2008, my friend and I drove a 1993 Toyota Corolla across the Trans-Labrador Highway to Newfoundland (click here to learn more). The experience, the roads and the car were all fantastic.

After the trip, I decided that I loved that Corolla so much that I wanted another one of the same generation, only with lower mileage. The problem is that most have very high mileage and rust problems. However, a 1992 Toyota Corolla Levin that had been imported from Japan was available at the time. So I took a risk and bought that Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Corolla which had everything my old one had only better (and with only 100,000km on the counter).

The Levin (click here for photos) has turned out to be a fantastic driver's car. I knew right away that it would be great for the road trip that I had been eyeballing for many years: a drive through the Eastern US via Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Natchez Trace. And since the combination of those roads covers a good portion of the trip down South, why not string them together with backroads and finish in New Orleans?

I spent a lot of time preparing the route with a road atlas, some guidebooks, the Internet and of course, Google maps. You'll see the result starting with Day 1 of what turned out to be a two week, 7608km adventure.
